A webcam test shows you what other people see before they see it. It takes about ten seconds and answers the three things that ruin a video call: the camera is not working, the picture is too dark, or the person on the other end is looking at a blur.
Run it once on the device you plan to use. If everything looks fine, you can go straight to camera chat with a clear conscience.

What the Numbers Mean
The read-outs under the picture are what the browser negotiated with your camera, not what is printed on the box.
| Reading | What it means on a video call |
|---|---|
| 640 × 480 | Fine for a small window, soft when the other person goes full screen. |
| 1280 × 720 | The usual standard for video chat. Sharp enough to read a face clearly and light on bandwidth. |
| 1920 × 1080 | Sharper still, but it needs a good connection, and most chat sites scale it down anyway. |
| 15 fps | Choppy. Movement looks like a flipbook. It usually means a dark room or a busy computer. |
| 30 fps | Smooth and natural. This is what you want. |
| Light 60–200 | The average brightness of your frame on a 0–255 scale. Below 60 is dim, above 200 is washed out. |
If the picture is sharp but the light reading is low, the fix is a lamp, not a new camera. The online mirror is the quickest place to try different positions.
Webcam Tester, Camera Test, Test My Webcam: Same Check?
Yes. A webcam tester, a camera test and a "test my webcam" page all do one thing: open your camera in the browser and show you the result. The differences are cosmetic.
What matters is that the test runs in the same browser you will use for the call. A camera that works in one app can still be blocked in your browser, because permissions are stored per browser and per site. That is why this page asks your browser directly instead of trusting your system settings.
Test My Webcam on a Laptop, Phone or Desktop
Laptop. The built-in lens sits in the top bezel, and the picture usually looks up your nose if the screen is tilted back. Run the test and nudge the lid until your eyes sit about a third of the way down the frame. That is also the quickest way to learn how to test a webcam on a laptop without installing anything.
Phone. Use the front camera. If the page shows a list, pick the one labelled front or user. Prop the phone against something steady, because hand shake looks worse on the other end than it does on your screen.
Desktop with a USB camera. If you have both a monitor camera and a USB one, the list lets you switch between them. Test each one, then check which the browser picked by default in how OmegaCam works.
No Picture? Start Here
- The prompt never appeared. The site may be blocked. Open the lock icon beside the address bar and set Camera to Allow.
- The picture is black. Another app is probably holding the camera. Close video apps and browser tabs that use it.
- The list is empty. The camera is unplugged or disabled in system settings.
Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari each hide this setting in a different place. The guide to a camera that is not working in your browser shows where for each one.
Camera Works? Check Your Sound Next
A clear picture is only half of it. Do a quick mic test so the first words out of your mouth are not "can you hear me?". Then open camera chat online and say hello.
Webcam Test Questions
Does the webcam test record me?
No. The picture is drawn on this page and nowhere else. Nothing is recorded, uploaded or stored, and the camera switches off when you press Stop or leave the page. A snapshot is only created if you press the button, and it stays on your device.
Why is the resolution lower than the number on my camera box?
The browser negotiates a size with the camera, and many laptops cap the preview at 1280 × 720 to save bandwidth. A dim room can also make some cameras drop to a smaller size or fewer frames per second. Add light and run the test again.
Why does my browser ask for permission?
Browsers never let a site use your camera without asking first. The prompt comes from the browser, not from OmegaCam, and you can change your answer later from the lock or camera icon beside the address bar.
Can I test my phone camera?
Yes. Open this page on the phone, tap Start webcam test and allow the camera. On phones with several lenses, pick the front camera from the list, since that is the one a video chat uses.
Is there a website to test my webcam?
Yes, this page. It is a free website to test your webcam in the browser: allow the camera, check the live picture and read the resolution and frame rate. Nothing is installed and nothing leaves your device.
How can I check my camera online?
Tap Start webcam test and allow the camera when the browser asks. If a picture appears, the camera works. If not, the lock icon beside the address bar shows whether the camera is blocked for this site.
